This baffles me. If I am out and about with the phone, and someone tries

make the phone stay turned on until further notice.

The screen/display in you A71 will use significantly more battery than the screens in old "not smart" phones. To minimise battery use the display will be turned off after a set time. This time can be changed in the device settings. The phone itself is not turned off, just the display.
