Thanks Michael, unfortunately it didn't work as the laptop already
has the same UID. Cerce ~ # id julian uid=1000(julian) gid=1000(julian) groups=1000(julian),4(adm),24(cdrom),27(sudo),30(dip),46(plugdev),113(lpadmin),130(sambashare) The output is the same on both machines. I'm at a loss now to understand why it thinks they are different users. Julian On 09/04/17 13:45, M. J. Everitt via

Not a major problem, except I needed to update a couple files which raised the issue of permissions. A spreadsheet for example would only open Read Only or Copy. I would like to use the same UID on both systems as I am the only person who uses them. I've read up on changing the UID but you cannot be logged in as the user you are updating, which is a problem as both systems only have one user - identical login details. Can I log into the laptop as root to change the UID on it? Once I know what the desktop uses. Kind regards, JulianIf you have a root password, you can indeed log in as root, and use the 'usermod' command to change UID (this will fix all permissions in /home folders too). If not, find an install CD or sysrescueCD (on a USB stick works fine) and chroot into your old system, and you can perform the 'usermod' from there. Good luck! Michael. |
