OK, sorry, whatever. But don't be so sure that CEOP is that well known, especially seen in a context were it seems to be unexpected. I've heard of CEOPs as they turn up on the Today prog on Radio 4, but I cannot recall ever having seen the button before. So as the LUG site is not a school website and not social media frequented by masses of young people I stand by what I said.On 06/03/13 09:40, Simon Robert -Cottage wrote:On 06/03/13 00:52, Paul Sutton wrote:Hi I have added a ceop report abuse button to the lug website on the main page, partly as this is in line with what a lot of other places are doing and it shows we are committed as group to protecting children and vulnerable groups (which I assume as a group or individuals we are) Paulsure have such a button on facebook or other social media sites where there may be an actual danger of grooming, but on the LUG site it smacks of unneeded posturing. Why not a notice saying the site contains no nuts (actually probably not true!) and is suitable for vegans as well... I think sticking this button on sites to which it is irrelevant devalues the button and also makes it seem that there are worries that LUG members could use the site for grooming and other abusive activities. Having it prominently at the top just looks weird to me. Are there also buttons for things like financial fraud, malware, fishing etc., because if you're going to make a child abuse hotlink the first thing a user sees maybe other links should also be up there. If you intend to keep it, stick it at the bottom of the page or a side panel or something... SThe same link appears on school websites it does NOT imply to that there are bad people in the schools, It is there so its another place where one can go to find the link to report abuse etc. As for moving it please feel free to log in and move it, I am sick of doing stuff on the site only to be criticised over something, constructive stuff about a broken link is fine, but this strikes me as precisely why we need the link. A few months ago I commented on the website and te need for it to be improved, since then we have had a few blog posts, and then it goes quiet (granted people are busy) part the reason for this is the lock down, and difficulty people have in getting accounts, I make a contribution and seem to get bashed about it., as for the comment in the other post " and still on the subject, doesn't such a link need some context about what it is, is for, and what CEOPs is. This justs sits there at the top of the page declaring "we are not in favour of child abuse" to those who actually know what it is... If it's going to be there it must be explained why it is there, how it can be used and so on... " people know what CEOP is. as I said there are links to ceop on school websites and other related sites it's there as a gateway to reporting, I have just added it to the site, so hopefully we are yet another site that shows we care, I thought Iw was doing the right thing, clearly not maybe therefore I should not bother adding more content to the site, I am sick of being got at. Paul
I guess we care about many terrible things that happen to people, but I am really not sure why this issue should be singled out and why it should have a link. Why not a link to sites to help women with violent partners or people with substance abuse problems or the Samaritans?
So I know why you've done it but I still think it's strange up there at the top with absolutely no explanation of what it is or why it's there on a site to which it has only marginal relevance. But if you're that passionate about the subject I'm not about to object.
