I think the issue is more that at times the discussions on this list are impossible for newbies to follow and can sometimes get deeply technical or philosophical which results in scaring the user off. What about a separate 'newbies' list? I've previously been against splitting the list in any way since with other LUGs this seems to result solely in pointless duplication (i.e. all messages end up being copied to both lists), but I think setting up a newbies list - with a clearly defined purpose and set of rules and without in any way changing the role of this list - could be a good solution to the problem. But there is of course the danger that it would simply divide the LUG in two and result in there being a less useful pool of knowledge for both newbies and advanced users to draw upon... This is not an easy problem to solve.
