That may just be a permissions problem. Open a console / terminal and su to root. $ su password: # chmod a+x /dev/dsp # exit $ When you next login, the sound server should start up properly and you won't get the message. Then try the CD again. Also, in the KDE Control Module, try going to Look and Feel and System Notifications. That may be a quicker way of testing the soundcard. Click on one of the + in front of the selections (KDE e.g.) and then on the KDE is starting up + and on Play Sound.
