Interesting news; thank you for sharing it. Maybe I am being a bit
cynical, but I think this is probably an indication that the product is
not really profitable for VMWare any longer and could be a prelude to it
being discontinued. The industry has mostly moved from standalone
virtualization on to container orchestration technologies.

Practically for anyone interested here in the LUG I can highly recommend
libvirt for virtualization. GNOME Boxes is a really simple GUI for
creating virtual machines, there is virt-manager if you want to
customize things further, and of course you can script the entire thing
with virsh and cloud-init. The nice thing about libvirt is that you can
switch between all of the above without losing any data in your virtual
machines.

You can also use systemd unit files to automate things, which I haven't
needed to do for virtual machines but works nicely for containers too.
