I have never used conky. Sometimes I wonder at what is included in the initial installation. Now it is usually spelt conky. I should have been more careful. If you check that spelling in Duckduckgo, you will find the information.Thanks. Yes. I have no need for it here. Most recent install was Debian testing (in expert mode) and neither conky or plank were installed. But then, testing isn't aimed at newcomers to Linux, so the "everything including the kitchen sink" approach is inappropriate.
I know you had your tongue fairly firmly in your cheek when you started, but it's produced some interesting views. I'm not a fan of changes, so stick with Debian rather than try other distros where, at the very least, I'll need to start using another package manager.
I don't use Debian myself, but I do use MX Linux which is based on Debian, and not on Ubuntu, which is good. I am not keen on Ubuntu.
Weirdly (perhaps), I was not at all bothered by the change from SysVInit to SystemD. However, that may well be because I don't understand either well enough to form an opinion. Of course, lack of knowledge hasn't stopped people in some quarters being quite vocal about the change.
Not weird to me. That sort of system just works in the background for me, so I just let it get on with it. MX uses systemd.
It's something that doesn't apply here, but what I see on many other mailing lists is people complaining wildly about SomeChangeOrOther without any real reason. I notice that those people aren't as clever as they like to think they are; They struggle with the existing system, whilst pretending they're a level 4000 demigod, and a new method/system means they'll be seen for the fool they truly are. Such people end up in my killfile quite quickly.
Yes. Sometimes an update or re-install will change something I don't like. So I simply change it back, if I can.
So, now you've had an insight into the workings of my mind. Which is only fair, since you've shown some of the workings of yours. ;-D Happy New Year.
And to you and all list members. It has to be better than 2020, please. Neil -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dcglug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
