Dear John, > The OnePlus security patches continued for 3 years and stopped, most > Android phonemakers stop after 2. I think security patches are > essential on Android. I have a Huawei Y550 (Android 4.4) and it has *never* had an update :/ > LineageOS is one way to handle that, it's upgraded my OnePlus to > Android 10 so far, with monthly security patches around 2 weeks after > Google releases them. I'd love to try LineageOS but I find the instructions rather confusing. Can you install it on any Android device or just those listed on the LineageOS website? If you could link to any in-depth tutorials I would be most interested and appreciative. > When they say "ethical phone gets hardware upgrades", are they talking > about their models before version 3 getting updated hardware modules, > or are they talking about a new phone model coming out. Google had a project called 'Ara' a while back that had modular, magnetic components. Since the project has now stalled I can only imagine that they have come to the same conclusion all the other manufacturers have done, which is that letting users upgrade their phones hurts the income statements...
