Like email flame wars - and stand up rows IRL - it happens, but I wouldn't say it's
typical, at least in the corners I see. In fact, long threads are in themselves
fairly rare in my usage. Mainly its likes and supportive retweets. Replies are
largely one-shot rather than a thread. Irksome tweeters are easily dealt with by
muting or unfollowing.
I guess like most communication devices, usage varies :-)
