Easiest question ever: Debian (stable version). Load up a desktop that won't terrify a normal user, so probably Mate or Cinnamon - Gnome3/KDE will rapidly scare off most non-experts. Not sure about the iCal compatibility personally, but I imagine Thunderbird/IceDove with the right plugin will handle that ok. The answer to all "which distro?" questions is 99% likely to be the same. Just use Debian.
