I work with some clever people, mostly software developers. One is an absolute Apple fan, and I noted today his Mac screen backdrop is the same as mine. Neither of us have taken a minute from our day to pick a different backdrop. Okay his is a shiny new Mac Pro desktop so he probably hasn't had it much over a minute. Trust me we both know how to change the image, and we both have images of our kids we'd probably prefer if we did change it. So whilst I'm very happy to tell folks that Windows 8 really is better than Windows 7, Microsoft deserve plenty of stick for stupid UI default behaviour. Most users don't give a fig any more about this stuff. They are use to Android, and iOS, and Windows XP, Windows 7, and they really don't want to have to change anything at all. Okay they like the ability to change a few things occasionally, mostly they want it to "just work". Most home users are pretty disgruntled at a login screen (unless they have kids). If they must have password don't give them a username to remember. As a result you see people migrating to Windows 7 because they took a 5 second look at 8 in the shop and decided "no". Heck I got a Chromebook for the good lady, trust me the defaults are perfect, the set-up really simple, you don't feel you have to change the default behaviour to make it tolerable, and it mostly keeps itself up to date fine. She does stuff she never did with Debian or Windows or Android even, because it is easy, even though the options available on what can be done are far fewer. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
