Do keep in mind it doesn't work the other way around: it's easy for spammers to strip the + and everything that follows, so in your example getting spam at neil@.. doesn't mean it wasn't FGW who leaked/sold the address.
(I have no idea if spammers do this. Would be interesting to find out.)
