When I'm not there it works on a boinc project in the background. My work laptop is only powered on when I'm there, otherwise it is off. My home PC is similarly only powered on when I am going to use it. Typically it remains on though until late at night when I then power it off. I also turn off my home router. So the equipment is only turned on/off once per day at most. I've had no problems with any of this for the past few years.
