With Gnome3 I haven't As noted in the GNOME 3 docs they were specifically trying to avoid dumping stuff on the desktop as it is considered a generally bad habit in terms of efficiency and organisation (yes they are subtly trying to get us to work more efficiently - the bastards). They don't want the desktop metaphor, so probably why you aren't getting there.
