Playing with my original install of Kubuntu in VBox I eventually created a problem in that I lost the panel and could not restore it. So I started again and installed Kubuntu again in VBox. This time I did some research via Google about installing Guest Additions in Ubuntu. I found out that I needed to have four programs installed first, namely gcc, dkms, build-essentials and linux-headers generic. I checked and only the last one was installed so I added the rest. Then I tried Devices --> Install guest additions. Nothing. So I decided to try using a terminal screen. I opened up the file manager, Dolphin, and found VBOXADDITIONS in the list. I opened that and found a list of files for installing the VA's. So I opened a terminal screen (F4) and entered sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run. This ran the script and all seemed OK. I looked at the logs in /var/log and all seemed fine. So, I thought, I will try to expand the window. Dragging it did not work so I looked around and finally noticed View --> Adjust window size in the menus. That worked. Now the window fills the screen. I have since used Devices --> Shared folders successfully. I have also used Devices --> USB Devices to read the contents of a memory stick in a USB port. So all appears well. There is just one oddity. If I try the menu Devices --> Install Guest Additions I either get nothing at all or I get an error message about not being able to access the iso file. What I expect to see is a message telling me that the GA's are already installed. Still, all seems OK. It was not straightforward at all, and I hope the above will help others. Meanwhile, thanks for all the help with this from those who answered my call for assistance.
