[LUG] skype on 64 bit Ubu

I've got some friends here for the week and they've brought a cheapo 
tesco camera that seems to work through cheese but not through skype.
skype works ok soundwise for her hubby in norway.
but puts up these errors on starting

its Skype 2.2.0.35

Any clues anyone - web search seems to find delete shared.xml wich 
achieves nothing.
Also anyone recommend a camera that works as the missus now wants to 
skype folks in portugal!!!
