I used it a lot when I was doing maths - it's the de facto standard in maths and science. That's also where it's most useful, but if you want to have a _lot_ of flexibility in the lay-out of a letter, document or book, it is a fantastic language to use. I rarely use it these days and tend to go for the easy option and use Open Office for letters. Though once you've created a nice template, LaTeX is rather easy for that purpose too. I'd say it is fairly easy to learn. Not as easy as HTML, but it's kind of the next step after that. Unless you're doing science I doubt you really need it, bur if you tend to get frustrated about text processing software making decisions for you, I'd say it's worth the effort.
