Surely some mistake here? $ file political.xvid.avi political.xvid.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 960 x 720, 25.00 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz) Its probably the MP3 encoding used for the audio that your movie player is objecting to. I can play it using free software from Debian. But MP3 is certainly not the best choice from a free software perspective. A better choice is Ogg Vorbis. The good news is that the software patents on MP3 have run out or are running out 'soon': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3#Licensing_and_patent_issues Other videos are listed on: http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/ There is a Debian video (they use Ogg Vorbis + Theora) about the Freedombox and Skype that might interest you. The official Speaker for the Debconf talk doesn't turn up but instead they discuss the Freedombox and then being Skype free: High quality (596MB): http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2010/debconf10/high/1255_Free_software_for_replacing_Skype.ogv Low quality (107MB): http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2010/debconf10/low/1255_Free_software_for_replacing_Skype.ogv <snip lots of good points> > If Facebook were the only, or primary place the meeting is promoted I > think it would raise issues, but I hope the primary places are the > mailing list, and the DCGLUG website. Simon, I would advise that you keep a watch that it doesn't become something that sucks people into Facebook or sucks them in further. Mike.
