Sounds reasonable.

It is likely also that if you remove applications the underlying
libraries will become spare.

The folks who make the packaging system have tried to identify these
dependencies and remove them automatically.

Occasionally it goes wrong, especially after things like upgrading a
whole distro, when there can be a lot of spurious packages around.

Be warned "purging" can remove user configuration data.

If you remove the packages and nothing breaks, you can purge them later.
If you purge them and something breaks, you can't rely on fixing it by
reinstalling the missing package.

Where as normally even if you removed KDE or GNOME with an "apt-get
remove someimportpackage" you can simply "apt-get install [list of
removed packages from dpkg.log]" and you'll be back where you were.
