I wouldn't mind if things stuck to the same rules, but it would seem that users should expect settings in one of the following: ~/.appnameconfigfile ~/.appname/configfile(s) ~/.config/appname/configfiles(s) ~/.gnome/ (somewhere) ~/.gnome2/ (somewhere) ~/.kde/share/apps/appname/configfile(s) ~/.kde/share/config/appnamerc ~/.kde4/share/apps/appname/configfile(s) ~/.kde4/share/config/appnamerc ~/.local/appname I understand the KDE camp and the GNOME camp wanting a 'framework' for managing applications' settings and other things, and I appreciate individual developers using ~/.appname/*, but it would be nice for a consistent approach across the board.
