I bridge about a 30m gap from one side of the building to another at
prazefarm.co.uk with two WRT54GLs with tomato firmware IIRC.

I'm thinking I should upgrade to the WRT160NL at 70GBP a piece
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168004 with dd-wrt firmware which only
recently supports it. That should be fast and Wireless-N claims to
have a better range but I have not been able to notice it.
