I was after some quick advice, googling gets confusing very fast,
especially trying to compare the Toshiba as it seems to have a huge

I basically have a choice of two laptops

Samsung R519

Celeron dual core T3100 1.90Ghz
   * Windows 7 Professional
   * 15.6" LED super bright display
   * 1GB memory
   * 160GB hard drive
   * Intel GMA X4500M DVMT graphics chip
   * DVD reader/writer
   * 3-in-1 media card adaptor
   * Integrated web cam
   * WiFi

Toshiba L450D

AMD SEMPRON 2.1GHZ
   * Windows 7 Professional
   * 15.6" TruBrite display
   * 1GB memory
   * 160GB hard drive
   * ATI Radeonâ HD 3200 graphics chip
   * DVD reader/writer
   * 4-in-1 media card adaptor
   * Integrated web cam
   * WiFi

Would the Toshiba be capable of gaming on, in particular World of
Warcraft. The CPU speed on it is higher, but its only single core I
think?

Haave you looked at the Blizzard web site for details of the minimum system requirements?

IIRC World Of Warcraft will work on a reasonably low spec PC but with lower detail settings so you may find that it will work, altough Windows 7 with a single core CPU and 1GB isn't going to fly (I've recently installed a Windows 7 update for a friend on a Celeron 1.73GHz single core machine with 1GB Ram and it wasn't bad, certainly quicker than Vista but still not brilliant).

However since it's running Windows 7 Professional, you have downgrade rights to install Windows XP Pro (although you'd need to get the media yourself).

Would the dual core celeron of the Samsung make up for the intel
graphics?

Possibly not. Graphics cores are quicker at doing graphics than CPUs. I read somewhere (on Phoronix I think) about some software OpenGL rendering running on a Quad Core Core i7 CPU and it wasn't as quick as using a dedicated video card.

Other uses of the machine would be a small amount of video editing,
probably photoshop and general purpose. Its primary role would be for
use by one of the kids when the other machine is in use. At the moment I
am leaning towards the Samsung as I thought the dual core would be
snappier and I suspect the Toshiba's ATI card might be too lowly to cope
with gaming, even something a few years old like WoW.

I think you'll find the ATI Radeon graphics is quicker than the Intel onboard graphics, although not by that much.

How much are you looking to spend, as both these machines have a fairly lousy spec for gaming (and having used a newish Toshiba with Ubuntu, I'd not recommend Toshibas).

Oh and if you're not going to run Linux on there then you'll find this isn't the best place to be asking for Windows advice.
