I also have a laptop running Mint 7 Xfce. I have installed FF v 3.6 on there too and Java is working fine. When I check the version it is v 6 update 16. So update 17 won't work on my desktop (Kubuntu Hardy) but update 16 is fine on my laptop!! I give up.
