I'd get a very expensive microphone, a good quality signal generator and check what they are actually giving you. IIRC a 12" bass unit will need to be moving in and out an 1" at 40Hz for a watt (my uni notes are snowed in at the mo). Making a sound doesn't necessarily mean its vaguely reminiscent of the input - even though in a great many circumstances the ear can be confused into believing it is.i disagree, my collection used to be @ 320 kb/s and sounded nearly as bad on a decent system, that's why its now flac.Depends on the bitrate. 128kb/s is quite noticeable; 320kb/s just isn't.its not a matter of being conned, if you can hear the difference yourself its not a con.I seem to recall hearing that online hi-fi forums banned discussion of double-blind trials. Presumably they don't like hearing evidence that they've been conned. That's what HiFi used to mean - High Fidelity - as close an approximation to the original sound as possible.exactly,, and "feel" the bass,,play the lowest note on a bass guitar (40hz) and most modern speakers dont even flutterwell mine do,
Well actually there was lot MORE true bass but it was clean and relatively undistorted - the ELS63 still have some real output at 60hz where most non-reflex designs are well into 10's of percent distortion at this - the ear hears the distortion and thinks that is due to the ear being overloaded and actually re-invents the original bass even though it never reached the ear. The ELS63 were actually giving out a lot more real audio at low frequencies (more HIFI) than the missions but with 'pop' the distortion and sound blurring seemed better - even though it was a lot less HIFI. I want my HIFI to be a HIFI and not something to cover up bad musicianship and mixing. I can make a good HIFI sound bad (better for pop) but I cant make a bad hifi tell the truth. Most modern speakers give a good illusion of bass - silver kimber cable delivering lots of amps to very thing coils that overheat and provide pop-pleasant distortion while loosing most of the original signal.Almost all listeners claimed greater volume/clarity and depth of field for the missions as they blur pop music giving it a more solid feeli.e. no true bass.
