I am aware that the LPI do an Ubuntu certification, might I suggest that as a starting block. Problem with the RedHat certification is that you are reliant on a Linux vendor, and their specific quirks, to be able to pass the course. CompTIA seems a little too vague for my liking. I can highly recommend the books by the nice people at o'rielly, I got their "LPI In a Nutshell" before I took my LPI 1 certification (back in 2004, I plan to do level 2 soon) and it REALLY helped.. I don't 'do' books much, but that one was great. there's my 2p worth.. If you want I can probably dig out the LPI training centre details (had an email about it recently), drop me a line off list if you're interested..
