I'm not convinced by either of these arguments. I think this is Adam Smith's laptop, with its sale price chasing the marginal cost of production to the bottom. At the same time the minimum effectiveness of the device rises due to technical advances, but mainly to amortization of production equipment for big enough memory chips, fast enough processors, cases as good as anyone needs or will design, screens that are as bright and sharp as we think we need yet and so on. And connectivity. The distinguishing feature which will remain, I think, will be size of screen since this defines at present the size of the device. Everything else will converge. And the operating system and software runs alongside the hardware to the bottom, with the market price of a commercial closed source operating system and office package not held off the US$3 prodcution and distribution cost of a DVD by anything that I can see short of the counter-revolution and fascism installed by the subterfuge of a war on terror. Which have not yet wholly succeeded. - -- A -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFISoPnb80am9d/StcRAhYnAJkBVgSn/HzjvIAZM8u79wFlzQ2nnwCg9VDh Z1bAkcSes04f8y3o5WChzII= =DtUh -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
