I think you said you upgraded the kernel and rebooted which changed the GRUB settings. This is presumably th "push" upgrade of the last few days you mentioned. If this is so, is a "newbie" likely to do this? I took the recommended route of upgrading Kubuntu via Internet to preserve what I had accumulated - it worked this time, albeit longer than using a downloaded Live CD. I reckon these are the two most likely methods for distros that do this. If a beginner does happen to learn to make a /home partition, then the second method might be favoured.
