I have to admit that I find his non sci-fi work much easier to get on
with.  There's only one book I've ever put down as basically unreadable,
but his sci-fi stuff occasionally comes close when I get to the point of
thinking "Why am I having to work so hard at this because it's not
really taking me anywhere?"

OTOH I think I read The Wasp Factory in one hit and wasn't able to put
it down and others have not been far behind (Complicity, perhaps?)
