It is kind of a wishlist bugs that crosses a lot of different packages and interfaces. These things are so frustrating, as when CUPS is set up and works, it is a dream, but in order to make it secure Debian makes part of it default to sharing on 127.0.0.1, and then to make it work in the Desktop it needs a GUI layered on top (sorry that web interface sucks, and which new users is going to 127.0.0.1:631 anyway?). The GNOME printer interface sucks still. From what I recall at work (I don't do a lot of printing) the KDE interface for printing is pretty good, and certainly is a lot more enticing if you want to try something beyond the basics in printing but don't fancy the command line, but is perhaps a bit more daunting for the simple cases. I hate to say it, but I think MS Windows does the printer users interface better, although here again a lot of printer manufacturers do a lot of work to make it all work more nicely on Windows, because Windows is so dominant. On the other hand the back end to Windows printing is one of those arcane mysteries, which has trained every user that the solution to a print job not printing is to "try it again" (argh).
