Also, I'm not sure how many Debian users run Unstable/experimental (I can't remember which) that Ubuntu is synced with; or maybe I'm the only one sticking with testing?
1. Ubuntu isn't strictly linked to either unstable or testing - the Ubuntu developers tend to follow testing but it is not automatic. With Ubuntu's release cycle, there are often periods when unstable/testing are far ahead of the "latest" Ubuntu, especially with "quieter" packages. Ubuntu then updates after the release. 2. Experimental is not a complete distro - no-one can run an entirely experimental installation. Missing packages are taken from unstable. In most cases, people running experimental packages (usually Debian Developers) only install the one or two that are of special interest, the rest of the system is Debian unstable. 3. Lots and lots of people use testing - I have two machines running testing and two running unstable. On occassion, I'll install some experimental packages onto one or both of the unstable boxes, usually in a process of testing prior to uploading my own experimental packages. Experimental is used for pre-releases and other experimental code. Experimental is also used for libraries that are changing API so that packages in unstable can migrate to the new API. The library then moves when the packages are ready - as happened with libpisock8, part of pilot-link. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/
