When I was in the prime of my distro-testing phase, I think I had something like 8 different Operating Systems on my harddrive at once. There are many ways to accomplish this, some harder than others. I don't think anyone can advise you as to whether you ought to "move on" from Mandriva. Indeed, I kept Mandrake around for a few years simply because I had tailored it to my needs... it certainly didn't look/behave like any other Mandrake setup! Certainly don't jump ship purely because Mandriva has an aire of "newbieness" about it - if it suits you and you're comfortable with it, stay with it, but keep your eyes open to other distros and give them a shot whenever you feel like it. Once you've done a dual/triple boot once, it becomes easy after that.
