In one room is my (Mandriva) computer which is physically connected to the router via a cable. In another room is my wife's laptop running Windows XP. She is set up to use the wireless connection so there is no cable connecting her laptop to the router. For the first three months, after setting up broadband, both computers acted as expected. The router could be left running, either computer could be switched on and once fully booted and running would be able to access the internet. After almost exactly three months my (Mandriva) computer suddenly would no longer access the internet if I logged on while the router was running. I had to switch off the router, log on to the computer, and then switch the router back on. I still have to do this. Meanwhile the laptop has continued to work normally. Incidently, someone mentioned something about leasing. I think it was someone in the local (Holsworthy) computer shop. They suggested that I might need to check on that, but I haven't been able to find anything about it. Is that another red herring? I have just checked again. The panel icon tells me 'Network is up on interface eth0'. The control centre Monitor Connections is also looking at eth0 and is telling me 'Not connected'. Both of these bring up the same window!! Weird. Manage connections tells me that I am using DHCP with the following information Vendor: VIA Technologies Description: VT6105 [Rhine III 10/100] Media class: NETWORK_ETHERNET Module name: via-rhine Mac Address: 00:13:46:8f:17:c1 Bus: PCI Location on the bus: 4 I am connected, of course, as I will prove by sending this email.
