I can think of two OS projects that I use which are most definitely pushing barriers. Mediaportal (Windows), Zoneminder (Linux) and no doubt there are loads more. To a programmer the hardware is always too slow, I don't believe OS programmers are significantly different to MS programmers in that respect.
