[LUG] Synaptic, Gaim etc not working.. firefox fine

Hi,

My ubuntu box is behaving strangely.. even with the mtu set to 1400
and ipv6 turned off, synaptic cannot access repositories and gaim
cannot sign into anything, while firefox works fine if rather slowly.
I'm using AOL (shame) - any suggestions? (Apart, of course, from
ditching AOL.)
