I don't believe this is true. Whilst some USB ADSL modems are no doubt bot supported, I think you'll find a great many are.
The main issue is that the support is not built in to the distro's which just makes it a pain to set up compared to Ethernet whilst is usually supported in the kernel (even gigabit!).
Eagle-USB supports the modem mentioned, it looks tried and tested.

how far did you get?
Is the device correctly recognised when you plug it in, before you try using the drivers for the Modem (i.e. in the standard USB drivers is it correctly recognised as a USB device).
Don't know if anyone has specific knowledge on the list, but most of these driver config issues fall to a little general knowledge and a little searching the relevant forums.
