From what I've read, both here on the list and in Linux Format magazine,
don't get an ADSL modem. Most modems (I believe) have little or no compatibility with Linux. Instead, get an ADSL router. This is a small box which plugs into the phone socket, and into a power socket. You plug your PC into this via a network cable, and broadband works pretty much immediately. If you want to be really clever, get a wireless ADSL router, then you can sit on the beach with a laptop, as I plan to do once broadband arrives here at the end of the month..
