We had Debian GNU/Hurd running at the Debian meeting last year - experience was very like Davids I fear. I learnt a lot about GRUB, but I'm not sure I benefitted much from the experience otherwise.
I believe X will run if you bash away at it hard enough, but there are some very basic bits of IPv4 support missing (DHCP, and variable length subnets IIRC).
I fear it will remain an item mostly of interest to computer science students for a while, that said it probably isn't that far from working well.
