My CD-ROM started misbehaving again. ?Renaming /bin/eject caused 
flurry of /frustrated/KDE-eject messages.

As the the DVD drive wasn't affected, I tried replacing the 3yr old Mitsumi 
ROM drive with a 5 year old Hitachi.  This seems to have cured the problem as 
the box has since behaved normally for several hours, including a couple of 
reboots for luck.
