Thanks everyone for your help; case now closed. Turns out that the network card driver module was loading fine at startup (due to the added alias entry in /etc/modutils/aliases), but wasn't being activated until the "ifconfig" command was subsequently manually issued. Having made the necessary amendments to /etc/network/interfaces the network is now coming to life automatically on startup, which is nice.
