Thank you, John, for this and other replies. I fear I may have inadvertantly set you up as the "Plymouth Uni Portal" specialist (aka "target") because of your help.
Nope, I'm no specialist on it; I try and avoid using it! Unfortunately even around here (computing service) I occassionally get asked windows questions. I really don't know why. I really must get a t-shirt that says 'Unix guy. I know nothing about Windows'! (Although I'm no unix expert either!) I was passed your mail message to the apps team (via the web team), and am interested as to their reply. I'll find out tomorrow what is going on if I can. I told them that using the ctrl-alt-f1 key might have shown whether your system was actually hung or not. I would say try it next time, but hopefully there won't be a next time! The main point I think though is that if there is a problem, regardless of whether non-MS apps are used or not, then you should be able to at least complain about it. If something gets resolved then great; alternatively if the answer is that only MS apps are supported then at least you know where you stand with regard to the service you are trying to use. As to the Uni more supporting unix/linux that would be great but I suspect it will be a long and slow process. The students have most clout there I think because they can insist (!) that unix/linux is taught because companies require it of them. The Uni will look bad if they are teaching things that are not helping the students to get placements or jobs. (Or rather are 'not' teaching things that companies are asking to be taught! Companies have a fair say in things because they provide spnsorship and placements.) I think also that if you look at other Uni's around the UK they have a happy (?) mix of windows/unix/linux boxes according to the required need, and that is how it should be. In our case it's more of being an MS site and tolerating unix/linux when it is necessary. Hence we have unix/linux servers but no open-access linux pc's and no central support for linux. (We also only have one member of staff working on the unix and linux boxes I might add!) The SoC had a lot of trouble getting permission (?) to dual-boot linux PC's whereas it should have been considered as part of the desktop pc tendering process. Needless to say there are other souls and departments out there that would no doubt like to use unix/linux but it is made difficult for them. I say no more :-) John. -- --------------------------------------------------------------- John Horne, University of Plymouth, UK Tel: +44 (0)1752 233914 E-mail: John.Horne@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Fax: +44 (0)1752 233839 -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
