Hi, Just thought I'd put my 2 peneth in here. I'm currently running a Sony vaio GRX516MD works well under linux once the kernels patched correctly. Previously I've run linux on an old IBM thinkpad (P 166) which was a rebadged acer motherboard. I've never had a problem running linux on Dell laptops. Currently I've got a P 300 running RedHat 7.3 with iceWM. I've had linux running successfully on most Acer laptops. However, to say that linux will run on all Acer's might be a bit hopeful. Acer user a wide range of motherboad manufacturers - Quanta, Compal, Wistron, and Acer themselves. How well Linux runs could depend a lot on whomade the board.
