[LUG] Load averages

can somebody please give me a good description of what load averages are, I
have looked around on the web and nothing I have read makes much sense.

I have got what is below and don't understand why I have a load average over
2 but both cpu's are above 90% idle.

12:31pm  up 50 days, 31 min,  2 users,  load average: 2.02, 1.93, 1.36
49 processes: 48 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU0 states:  0.5% user,  0.2% system,  0.0% nice, 98.3% idle
CPU1 states:  0.3% user,  0.0% system,  0.0% nice, 99.2% idle

I'm probably being stupid, can anybody shed some light on this for me.
