Well sure, there will be people on this list of all levels of linux experience, and I'm sure some people will soon want to experiment. The fun and joy of compiling your first application is immense, try it over Christmas when your waiting for the rain to stop :) It is ok to talk specifics on this list, isn't it? Every source code archive you download will include a README and/or INSTALL to read. It's not that scary. Not everyone will be brave enough, but at the end of the day, if you set a like: ./configure --prefix /usr/local/effectv You can always delete that one application from your system. ( don't forget that the /usr/local/effectv/bin directory would need to go in your path statement ( check your ~/.bashrc ) If other apps link to dynamic .so libraries from this app, you should add /usr/local/effectv/lib into /etc/ld.so.conf All you need is the imagination as to what you want your PC to do. Have fun. Bill. p.s. I do use RPMs for everything that i can, but there is so much code out there, it will never all get built for every variation of linux. It's all well and good, Banging on about, Syntax - Compiling Beta's and generally hissing and spitting command line arguments out. But many of the newer users of Linux are, have and will be coming from a Windows background. It is important to encourage them gently to look for themselves and to try to figure things out and ask further questions.. Installing packages makes things much simpler, using a graphical package manager lends itself far easier to an MS migrant then saying "Wake Up and see the light you need to scouer sourceforge get a tarball... Tar xvzf..../.conf... ./mak" and Blah Blah. Most people with will just say "Oh F~** It where's that Windows XP Disc. Rick Bill Noyce wrote:Wake Up - And see the light.... Have you not yet tried searching for a specialist application, be it the latest CD burner with MultiSession support. A Multi track record. Multiple Video Format Viewer. Try it think of some crazy app and someone on freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net will have the code already in beta/stable stages. Now try asking them if they have rpm's for redhat 12. Come on.
