A thought has occurred to me, how many people on here have experience of using Linux as a desktop system,
I do. WIth one or other the Palo Alto - type GUI running.
I say this because i never use things like the graphical file managers etc and have no idea how hard they are to use for a new linux *user*.
In windows I have always used command sessions for stuff where I need to be sure of what is happening, and things that are simple to do that way and hard on the cmd line. And drag and drop for some things... The drag and drop in W3.1 was a good use of the metaphor, I don't think it has noticeably improved since then, but perhaps it had reached type-object status by then. The drag and drop on KDE 2 and Gnome Sawfish seems useful as well. File manager in W3.1 was v good, and in fact the OS/2 - like folders and Explorer are not an improvement on it - they exert too much control over the user. Konqueror has some of the same limitations, so a console with mc running in it is often easier to use. What is particualrly interesting is that in a room full of windows-users, showing slides using Star Office on KDE does not cause comment - the interfaces are similar enough in function and the average user (of windows) is not really interestedin or often aware of subtleties. Just get on with it I'd say. -- From one of the Linux desktops of Dr Adrian Midgley http://www.defoam.net/ -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
