A thought has occurred to me, how many people on here have experience of using Linux as a desktop system, like a normal user would use Windows etc.
File management is considerably easier than on Windows. Without the resource leaks of Explorer, you can keep navigating around and around in Konqueror or Nautilus without any decrease in speed. The file type handling is far better and more intuitive. The demarcation between ordinary-bod-user and Super-User is obviously important and quite a life-saver. I'm starting to use more and more images (after getting jphoto to link to my Kodak DX3600 digital camera) and it just is NOT easy to sift through old images in console mode. Pick and Trash is a far easier way of keeping disc usage within limits. I've always preferred single-click and that is a welcome boost. The other neat trick is that the window manager / KDE theme updates the icons used for all types, not just special folders. I particularly like seeing the new widgets in apps like KMail - it's something that Windows simply cannot do. Windows has gone too far GUI, the whole appeal of Linux for me is that I've always got a console to slip into when needed. The Ctrl-T command comes in very handy for browsing cover CD's/DVD's. - -- Neil Williams ========== www.codehelp.co.uk www.dclug.org.uk -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE9OaRjk7DVr6iX/QIRAmXqAJ9eKuaVQPvFwPdshLkeGV1apS1W3QCfVor+ MR/l0K8RRMCSLOqPRpP44+M= =8XGS -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
