Do you really want to publish your home address like that?Tis ok alex publish it ! After all i have a UKinfo DVD which if i put my name into it can identify me from census and electoral info and can also give directions on how to get to me house with handy autoroute type maps (spooky) so privacy is non-existant And that software was on a cover disk!
Just because you have that DVD, it doesn't mean that many others can reach that info. What Alex and I are concerned about with private details in the DCLUG archive is sheer availability. 1. The Electoral Role isn't available globally. 2. It isn't available to absolutely everyone online. 3. The DCLUG archive is comprehensively indexed by multiple search engines. The DCLUG site has a customised 404 error page to cope with just these problems - it surprised me how many people found the DCLUG site when searching for completely unrelated topics. One message about a child charity resulted in a dozen emails from non-list members complaining about not finding the file once the archive was moved to make room for newer messages. So, it would be advisable for private details, especially home addresses, to go via private email. (All list members have access to the email address of the member sending the message, the archive removes this later.) On the same topic, if your email address exists in your email signature (not the GnuPG / PGP signature, the bit added at the end of your message with your name etc), you should expect some web robots to locate it. The archive process removes the other details. It may increase your spam. - -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.codehelp.co.uk/ neil@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx neil@xxxxxxxxxxxx -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE9MdLek7DVr6iX/QIRAgKzAJ9TKUGrpSQ2axAwfFspFO1a1PusMACgjTgA VWgZ8ramzsRIpmZQJt5+W+0= =zgfQ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
