Blame your shitty connection. If you just want to update perl, do a dselect update as usual, but do a apt-get install perl instead of update afterwards. :) There is a surprisinly good apt-get howto(!) I learnt a fair few things even though I have been using the tools for a fair bit.
I hear you, but I wanted something easy for them.
