If you boot from a rescue cd/floppy and mount the root fileystem you 
should be able to re-load lilo into the mbr/boot partition with something 
like:

# /mnt/my_root/sbin/lilo -r /mnt/my_root

where /mnt/my_root is the root slice you're trying to rescue. The -r has 
lilo perform a chroot to that directory so it will pick up your lilo.conf
