Most Unix distributions ship 'traceroute' SUID root.

Vulnerabilities were still be found in this in October last
year, it is possible they have all gone *8-)

Some Linux distro's have removed the SUID bit on traceroute as
it was getting a reputation to rival sendmail, rpc.statd and
lpd.

That your flavour of traceroute runs as an ordinary user, may
just show they aren't as security conscious as other
distribution vendors.

But this has been discussed by people who know far more than I
in other places.........
