Vulnerabilities were still be found in this in October last year, it is possible they have all gone *8-) Some Linux distro's have removed the SUID bit on traceroute as it was getting a reputation to rival sendmail, rpc.statd and lpd. That your flavour of traceroute runs as an ordinary user, may just show they aren't as security conscious as other distribution vendors.
