Try it. Linux Format had 4.0 on the cover recently if you don't have a
copy or the bandwidth.
The readme file tells you how to back out the changes quickly by backing
up the whole X11R6 directory hierarchy (Although do make sure you have a
good backup, and double check where that XF86Config file is living and
back that up as well).
My failed attempt was a lot quicker than the effort to get XF86 working
in the first place 8-)
